Yesterday we got the first calf to start the next herd. He came from the farm where Tessa works and she is probably the one who started him since she breeds the cows. Last year's calves are quite large now and may be sold in January. It's just right to have animals on a farm. Our neighbors who have farmed and milked cows for many years just sold all their cattle and every time I drive by I feel so sad and almost feel like a death has taken place.
I haven't seen a hummingbird in 4 days and only have bees at the feeders, so I think they have flown to warmer lands. I'll miss them.....until May.

I love how the calf is all tucked in the foliage. How very sad about your neighbors, it is a death, a death of dreams of blood sweat and tears, hopes and hard work. Very sad. The bumble bees have been crazy busy in my berry patch.
looks right at home. Will you be getting any physically or mentally challenged ones this year?
What? You have a farm for special needs cattle?
Well, looks like you have some clearing up to do.. and tell everyone about your "challenged" ones..
Yes, if John is ever offered a free calf, he takes it. We've had ones who can't straighten their front legs, retarded ones, and blind ones. Last year's cripple lived quite a while and then croaked. Blind Boy is still alive and doing well. He's slightly retarded too.
